Everyone, from fitness buffs to serious athletes, seems to be looking for the next advancement in workout gear. That one item that pushes their results from good to great. But never has a single item created so much interest and controversy as the toning shoe. Toning shoes were created on the principle that the harder you work to maintain balance, the more your muscles are engaged, so consequently, your legs and buttock muscles get an extra workout with every step. They’re also reported to have positive benefits for your posture. They achieve this by giving up the traditional flat bottom, and opting instead for a rounded bottom that makes each step a little less stable. If you want to include toning shoes in your workout, acclimate yourself slowing and listen to your body.

Eva Mendez's toning shoesWalking has become the default exercise for people on the go, and a more joint friendly version of high impact activities like aerobics and jogging. It’s also the best way to begin incorporating toning shoes in to your regime. In addition to replacing the elevator with the stairs and parking at the end of the parking lot instead of right by the door, wear them until you get to your desk and take advantage of every step. It’s not uncommon to feel some initial soreness in your legs, because you are engaging new muscles to get used to that rounded sole. But, the shoe is also designed to provide extra support to the ankles and take pressure off the heels.

Keep in mind that toning shoes are meant for low impact activities and are not recommended for jogging. You may become tempted to pick up the pace because you no longer feel your muscles responding. This just means it’s time for a longer session. Consider taking your workout off road and try trail walking.
